Tailored 1-to-1 teaching in Winchester and Southampton
Methods of tuition
The teaching at Wessex Tutors is usually on an individual basis. We aim to have the most flexible programme possible for each student. The college can prepare the students for the exams of any of the examining boards. We can continue with any specification which a student has already been following, or we can help students to change to alternative specification where it is felt their content or timing would be more appropriate. It is possible for students to take any combination of subjects and to combine GCSE with A/S or A2 levels.
Many students need guidance on how to study and our tutors devote considerable attention to this. Students are taught to concentrate on the essentials of an argument; they are helped to plan their written work and to present it clearly and logically. As most students come to us for intensive examination courses, we place considerable emphasis on practising exam technique and writing timed answers from past examination papers.
In addition to their tutorial periods, students are set between 3 and 5 hours homework per subject per week. All homework is marked by the tutors, who make sure assignments are completed on time.
Reports on students' progress are sent at the end of each term and at half term in the autumn.
The Principal and tutors are always available to discuss the work and progress of students with parents.
Interviews
All prospective students are required to attend an interview. The Principal will discuss their personal requirements and problems, and will be able to advise them on the most suitable course. A change of specification or subject may be suggested if it is felt it would be of benefit to the student.
Attendance
At the beginning of each term, individual timetables are arranged in consultation with the students. Some students come to the college daily, others for two, three or four days each week.
Some students come to the college for their lessons, but prefer to do their private study at home. Others prefer to stay and work here all day. This flexibility is allowed as it is a better preparation for University life.
UCAS Applications
We can provide academic references for our tuition students where they have been with us since the start of the Autumn term.
University and college prospectuses are available at the college.
